Frequently asked questions.

What is your cancellation policy for deposits?

We offer refunds on deposits up to 30 days prior to the estimated “ready” date of your order. Since we don’t usually know the exact date that your order will be ready until a week prior, if we expect it early in the month, the refund will be based on 30 days from the 1st of that month. If we expect it to be ready mid-month, the refund will be based on 30 days from the 15th of that month. However, if you are within the 30 days and need to cancel, we will always do our best to find a replacement customer for your order. If we are able to do so, we will refund your deposit!

If you are dissatisfied with your order in any way, please contact us within 14 days of pick up so that we may work on a solution for you!

What breed of cattle do you raise? What do you feed them?

Our herd is Angus/Limo cross. We have ~440 cow/calf pairs. Our animals are 100% home bred and raised. Our steers and heifers are grass raised and grain/grass finished. We butcher year round, which means our animals are butchered from 12-22 months of age. Our animals are antibiotic free and we do not use growth hormones.

What is the difference between Hanging Weight and Packaged Weight?

Hanging weight (also known as rail/dressed weight) is the weight of the carcass after initial slaughter once the hide, organs, head and feet have been removed. This weight still includes the trim, which is the fat and bones. This is the weight used to calculate the price/lb for the meat and the butchering fees, which is typical for farm direct ordering. We ensure our animals are nicely marbled but not overly fatty. We want to be sure our customers are buying meat in bulk… not fat.

Packaged weight is the final weight of you order once it has been trimmed, cut and wrapped. This number is typically 60-65% of the hanging weight, which factors in some water loss during the ageing process, trim, and the types of cuts chosen (for example, if you choose mostly bone-out cuts, you will end up with the same amount of meat as you would with bone-in, but your packaged weight will be less).

This means that finding the true value of your order can be a bit confusing, and we want to make sure the process is as transparent as possible; so, we have broken it down using the following example:

Customer purchased a half order that had a hanging weight of 300 lbs. They paid $5.50/lb for the meat, and $0.99/lb for cutting and wrapping (plus an additional $90 fee for slaughter and disposal charges). So:

  • Beef cost: 300 lbs x $5.50/lb = $1650

  • Butcher fees: 300 lbs x $1.04 = $312 + $90 fee = $402 x 5% gst = $422.10

  • Total cost: $2072.10

  • Packaged weight = 189 lbs (63% of hanging)

  • True value = $2072.10 / 189 lbs = $10.97/lb

So, this means that in the end, from the ground beef right up to the rib eyes and tenderloin steaks, the customer’s cost/lb ended up averaging $10.97/lb.
